News: Asia Circuit Memorial Tournament Hakata Results, Doctor O's Picks

Closing the Memorial Tournament that previously visited Osaka, Nagoya and Tokyo, the Hakata stage of the Asia Circuit Memorial Tournament is ending on a slight overturn, as the Eradicators that seemed to be set to maintain steady dominance throughout the tournament were relegated to "just" second place in Hakata. Beaten out by an Ezel-based deck that incorporates Gancelot as its break ride, the upset is further emphasized because the runner-up may be the reigning national champion Nakamura Seishirou, who took the title in the previous year's Fighter's Climax 2012 tournament. Photographs of the tournament have not yet surfaced, but this name and particular combination of kanji are both rare and somewhat old fashioned; although not as unique as Rikino Sakura, there is a high probability that it's the same fighter. Nakamura previously played a Majesty Lord Blaster-based Royal Paladin deck, but his build was crippled by the January-on restricted list that Bushiroad instituted following his victory.

To finish the tournament, Doctor O also picked his favorite decks remaining from the top 8 of each tournament, amending the decklists previously uploaded to CF-Vanguard in the process. These decks did not make it to first or second place, but are simply decks that he liked.

Nakamura Seishirou is the 2012 winter national champion for Japan. Like Nakagawa in the juniors, Nakamura entered his deck into a format where the dominant deck of the time was still Dragonic Overlord the End, despite the setbacks it had faced in the previous tournament. And while the Gold Paladins had an overall greater presence in the tournament season at the time of his entry, Nakamura chose to favor the superior consistency and reliable skills of the Royal Paladins, rather than make the jump over to the Golds' more randomized calling. His matches became influential during the Fighter's Climax 2012 tournament, where the Royal Paladins maintained ground over newer decks along with their contemporaries, despite facing serious competition from Oracle Think Tank and Kagerou.

Shortly after his crowning, the 2013 restricted format took effect, outlawing Nakamura's championship deck along with those of his predecessors.

Decks and Play Style
In contrast to Nakagawa, Nakamura's deck did include a full run of draw and heal triggers, to avoid possible imbalances caused by having an odd run of those cards. However, he seemed to agree with Nakagawa on running a full playset of the Knight of Friendship, Kay, despite the cards' problem in the early stages of a game. This was in contest to contemporary ideas of Kay having difficulties in the early stages of the game, when there is no Blaster vanguard to trigger his skill. In fact, the deck's build is very similar to Nakagawa's, with only the critical emphasis and a difference in how grades 1 and 2 should be balanced as 14/12 or 15/11 to differentiate them. Even the single copies of Bedivere and Gancelot are the same.

This is due to their roots, with inspiration being drawn from fourth-place national finalist from the previous champoinship, Minami Takeshi. Like in his first deck, both cardfighters included the maximum count of Kay possible, using Marron and Toypugal as the basis for the rest of their grade 1s. Rather than drop down to his final decklist's low 13-count grade 1s however, in order to be able to include four copies of Iseult in addition to their support units, Nakagawa and Nakamura both chose to decrease the amount of grade 3s and 2s in their decks. Their grade 2 lineup is thus identical to Minami's, with Nakamura adapting it to the letter while Nakagawa chose to make additional room in his grade 1 list. Rather than rely on Alfred as an alternative to Starcall Trumpeter however, both fighters emphasized Palamedes' use in the rearguard as a way to force the opponent to defend, improving the devastation that Lord Blaster's extra critical can bring about on the turns after his soulcharge.

Nakamura's championship deck shifts toward a policy of flexibility, replacing one of his Palamedes for Alfred, to use his counterblast for a more consistent field and giving Nakamura a favorable grade 3 in five out of seven possible rides. The removal of Toypugal in favor of Lien likewise promotes consistency by sifting through the deck with her card change skill, albeit it promotes a weaker matchup versus The End by giving Nakamura problems in forming base 18000+ rearguard lines.

Nakamura Seishirou was the 2012 regional champion for Hakata. While he was one of the stronger candidates for the title, Nakamura was generally placed behind Shibata Yuusuke in terms of which Kagerou cardfighter was more likely to seize the throne.

Decks and Play Style
Nakamura uses a draw-heavy The End deck which is geared towards flexibility based on the opponent rather than on a direct, automated play style. Making full use of his Conroe first vanguard, Nakamura's primary targets for the Lizard Soldier's skill are Kimnara, Heat Nail and Aermo. Like with other The End decks, Aermo is used to cycle out cards in search of extra copies of The End to persona blast, while also dropping drive checked cards for its cost to fully conceal his hand from the opponent. Heat Nail retires the opponent's grade 1 boosting units while pressuring the opponent to guard to stop its skill, and this is where Nakamura's six draw triggers come in; they compensate for Heat Nail cycling himself back into the deck after using his autoskill, negating his cost. These draw triggers likewise make up for Kimnara leaving the field when her own skill is used to unavoidably remove those same units.

Bellicosity Dragon unflips damage expended on Conroe and Kimnara, as well as counterblast spent on Berserk Dragon, to prepare for Overlord and The End's self-standing skills. In the vanguard circle The End creates a 13000-power defense while providing Nakamura with an additional 11000-power unit for his rearguard circles in addition to Overlord. While each of these cards can be weakened by removing their rearguards with Lawkeeper and field removal units, those decks' lack of presence in the Japanese competitive scene makes Nakamura's deck versatile and dangerous to face.

Nakamura chose to forgo some of his previous deck's early game versatility by removing Kimnara for the championship finals, limiting his options with Conroe. However, the counterblast-heavy nature of his deck leaves little room for her skill in the first place, potentially making Heat Nail the more useful unit.

News: Fighter's Road 2012 Sendai, Hakata and Tokyo

This morning the winners of the three followup Fighter's Road 2012 regional competitions were announced through Bushiroad's official CF-Vanguard Japanese website. As in the preceding events, we are seeing the return of some of the previous year's pros, including Otobe Takasuke of the 2011 Grand Prix. In general however, Sendai, Hakata and Tokyo are seeing more newcomers than other cities.

First place winners in these competitions will go on to the national championship; two among those at the championship will be crowned Japan's 2012 National Champions. Following these three cities, we await results from Sapporo and Osaka.

This set of regionals saw the return of The King of Knights, Alfred, whose continuing popularity has bolstered him into Sendai's first-place slot. Dragonic Overlord The End remains a popular choice, and continues to vie with Majesty Lord Blaster for this year's most favored deck. Blond Ezel currently makes up the underdog deck, making a strong presentation at several of this year's competitions. Additionally, this marks the debut of Spectral Duke Dragon outside of the trio battles.
