News: Sanctuary Guard and Kagerou Top Yamato CS, Murakumo in Second

June 13th 2015, Koyasu civic center, Hachioji. First place at the Yamato Championship team tournament has been taken by Team Suddenly Sussan, running Kagerou, Shadow Paladin and Sanctuary Guard Dragon decks. Second place at the team tournament was taken by Team Nameko, running Kagerou, Shadow Paladin and Murakumo decks. The final set between team captains Battle Dome (Dragonic Overlord  “The X”) and Sussan (“The X”) were streamed live to Twitcasting, and recordings of the final set are provided below. So far only the Murakumo decklist has been uploaded to the web, with the remaining lists and tournament breakdown likely to come out of the woodwork within the next few days.

While this is the first major tournament that Murakumo has topped in, by this time Sanctuary Guard has settled in as a firm part of the Japanese game. Sanctuary Guard placed first at the Hakata VGCS earlier this week, despite Revenger cardfighters accounting for nine of the top sixteen decks. Prior to that, the deck had been used by the fourth-place cardfighter at the 193 Meieki Shop CS, a 64-person tournament held in early April. The deck's popularity as a rogue owes to the specific-heart stride it received in Fighter's Collection 2015, Sanctuary Guard Regalie. A renovated version of Royal Paladin's ancient Cosmo Dragon strategy, Regalie continuously endows the entire frontrow with +3000 power for every grade 1 or less rearguard in play. Regalie is not mutually exclusive with Jewel Knight support, so this allows for easy abuse of Swordmy, Tracie and Cymbeline in addition to genericized generation break support like Knight of Twin Sword.

With Tracie as a standalone 21000~31000 power attacker, and Knight of Twin Sword and Starlight Violinist to superior call one another in the battle phase, the Sanctuary deck has taken off as an overwhelming serial attack strategy that can also make maximum use of stand triggers after forcing the opponent to a high damage count with Samuel on a previous turn. The Sanctuary-Jewel Knight hybrid overwhelms assaults opponents with multiple high-power rearguard attacks without needing to dedicate to large single turns like in Thing Saver, creating an innovative fusion of disparate strategies that has just the right characteristics to thrive in the current format.

Meanwhile the Murakumo deck in second place is an entirely new breed; by appropriating the Magatsu revival legion purely for its legion functionality, the Murakumo cardfighter was able to cycle units back into the deck so that they could be targeted for same-name superior call skills even if they had already been removed beforehand. In the process they also gained access to Kuzunoha, a promotional grade 2 from last year's legion festival that can clone any other allied rearguard if the vanguard is in legion. The current incarnation of Murakumo specializes in a mixture of superior calling and then adding cards directly to the hand, keeping them on the field or sending them to the bottom of the deck at different stages of the fight, to build up both a strong offense and defense across multiple turns that can alternatively hide in the deck from retire or lock skills, or satisfy the retire condition of opposing Phantom Blaster “Diablo” strides.

GmfWingal, winner of the first Sakura CS, reported going to the tournament and playing a Messiah deck, going 4-0 versus an opponent that did not show up, Revenger, Link Joker and Kagerou cardfighters, then in the top cut winning 2-1 against Great Nature in the top cut and losing 1-2 versus Kagerou. Link Joker's lack of presence in the finals is conspicuous, as the deck was highly anticipated prior to this, and the cards necessary to play it have jumped up to exorbitant prices in the lead-up to the current batch of tournaments. White Dwarf Lady Battler is the most egregious case by far, currently a 3000 yen promotional card--the currency equivalent of $24 per copy, more than Japanese Phantom Blaster “Abysses” go for.

Third place at the Yamato CS was taken by Team Deaspan running Kagerou, Shadow Paladin and Thing Saver, while fourth place went to Team Saitou (abbreviated name) running Kagerou, Shadow Paladin and Sanctuary Guard. Full decklists for all teams and a breakdown of the tournament results are pending.

The VGCS tournaments are a series of unofficial tournaments organized by fans and cardshops. Unlike Bushiroad's official tournaments, most VGCS events are done using a best-of-three, Swiss tournament model. Turnout is typically 70-80 persons, but some events see 100 or more participants, all of whom compete using pseudonyms and internet handles rather than their real names as in official events. The VGCS model of fan-organized play has begun to gain popularity internationally, with the bi-monthly BeNeLux tournaments serving as their European equivalent, and there are now similar grassroots organizations emerging in the United States like the ARG Circuit series tournaments and the King of Cardfight competition in the American midwest.

News: Goddess of the Full Moon Tsukuyomi Tops Sukacat CS

Fighter's Collection 2014 reprint.
January 18th, 2015. The first team tournament of 2015 ended with a surprising deck at the center of the leading team. The Sukacat Vanguard Championship was won by a team running Thing Saver Dragon, Goddess of the Full Moon Tsukuyomi and Dragonic Overlord “The X.” The team's midfighter Ryo accomplished his feat by integrating Heaven Conquering Battle Deity Susanoo and his support cards from G-BT01: Generation Stride with the Tsukuyomi evolution line, using the evolution and generation break skills to repeatedly stack the bottom of the deck with trigger units while adding nontrigger cards to the hand.

This marks the first monoclan Tsukuyomi top in over two years; while Yasue Takamasa's Genesis-Oracle Think Tank hybrid made top 8 in a regional qualifier in mid 2013, the last time pure OraThin Tsukuyomi won a tournament was under former Sendai regional champion Tanaka Shouta in November 2012. The last time that Tsukuyomi topped, her widespread success eventually led to her finding a place on the restricted list alongside Dragonic Overlord the End and Majesty Lord Blaster. Many of Shouta's innovations have since become essential core elements to Oracle Think Tank, and Ryo's modifications have further improved the deck to create a circular loop in as few turns as possible. The decks of each team member are transcribed below.

Susanoo
Ryo's endgame strategy was to guarantee continuous double triggers for the rest of the game past a certain threshold of bottom-deck stacking, effectively presenting his opponent with a time limit before Tsukuyomi would explode. To build up to this point he first used an old trick of Oracle Think Tank, using the skills of Ichibyoshi, Crescent and Half Moon Tsukuyomi to put between twelve and fifteen cards on the bottom of the deck. Each of these units checks the top five cards for the next incarnation in its line and rides them, then places any remaining cards on the bottom.

In the past many cardfighters have deliberately stayed on grade 2 while feigning gradelock in order to get their stack to reach twenty cards, but in 2015 the deck has better options. Susanoo's on-stride skill checks the top two cards, placing up to one into hand and any remaining on the bottom. Combining this with the stride unit Soaring Auspicious Beast Qilin--who has an identical skill but with on-hit conditions attached--Ryo was able to get two to four more cards on the bottom of the deck, following up in later turns with his "finisher" Takemikazuchi.

Takemikazuchi
By turning a copy of himself in the generation zone face-up and paying two counterblast, as long as there are two or more cards face-up in the G zone, Takemikazuchi checks the top four cards to add two to hand and place the remaining on the bottom. These new units greatly expedite the process of setting up a twenty card stack without having to deliberately take a turn of gradelock, all while keeping up a strong defensive hand and using supporting rearguard draw skills to ensure that the opponent can't knock them out before the stack is reached. Full Moon herself played into this bunker defense strategy by shaving off up to four cards from the top of the deck with her draw skill, although compared to going for Takemikazuchi or Susanoo this is not as preferable.

According to Ryo, his record in the tournament was much better in the finals than in the opening rounds. The first four rounds of the tournament were held in best-of-one, with Ryo getting two wins off of Kagerou and Oracle cardfighters, preceded by two losses against Royal Paladin and Kagerou fighters. In the finals he won all four rounds 2-1 (Kagerou) 2-0 (Kagerou) 2-0 (Royal Paladin) and 2-1 (Kagerou.) The tournament finals were Shou's Thing Saver versus Victor-Raizers, Ryo's Tsukuyomi versus “The X,” and Kaiji's “The X” versus Susanoo-Mille Feuille.

Of note is that team captain Kaiji's “The X” decklist is one of the last that will be seen with four copies of Calamity Tower Wyvern in it, due to the card's imminent restriction effective this February.

News: Eighth Battle City VGCS Decklists, Glendios and Kagerou Reign Over Triples Tournament

Eastern Cultural Center, Sakai city, Osaka. Image source.
The Battle City CS organization has reported its latest tournament results, and the eighth Sakai ChampionShip has been won by team Priests of Double Critical. While the previous CS saw Blaukluger and Nouvelle Vague in the spotlight, this time two Omega Glendios cardfighters have taken the gold in one of the early team tournaments of the BT15-on format. One constant has remained between Battle City tournaments; as in the previous competition, the midfighter for the winning team used a dedicated Raging Form Dragon deck. In contrast to the mix of RFD-Dragruler that have become commonplace in Japan, Adesu's RFD build has emphasized using the established Raging Form-Mordred makeup developed around BT12, foregoing the crossride entirely and mixing Blaster Dark Revenger support with cards from Infinite Rebirth. This exists in contrast to the established trend of cutting Dark Revenger entirely for Lukea and Mana, a practice that emerged in light of Dragruler's counterblast costs generally replacing Blaster Dark's.

Glendios meanwhile is continuing to grow in popularity among Japanese fans after its success at the Hakata and Tsurumai VGCSes. While an innovative means of using both World Line Dragon and Dust Tail Unicorn in the same deck had been developed at Tsurumai through the grade 2 Colony Maker, this strategy has not seemed to catch on elsewhere, where additional cards of other grades are preferred for consistency over Dust Tail's additional Lock.

Second place team "Over There, Here and There" was made up of three Kagerou cardfighters playing Dragonic Overlord “The Яe-birth” and Nouvelle Vague decks, with the latter making up two thirds of the team. Team forward Minorun expanded Overlord's strategy slightly by experimenting with Kagerou's new grade 2 promo, Dragon Dancer Arabella, whose counterblast 1 powers up a Flame Dragon vanguard by +5000.
Dragon Dancer, Arabella
Since all of the vanguard options in the current Overlord deck make use of self-standing limit breaks, and “The Яe-birth” in particular Locks all of his own rearguards to fight alone, this build is able to make special use of Arabella by attacking with the power increase two or three times. Team OTHT's Nouvelle fighters brought identical decks that both made use of the grade 2 Dominate Drive Dragon, a base 12000 power attacker triggered by having a "Dauntless" vanguard in play. This took advantage of how long Nouvelle builds tend to sit on Dauntless Drive Dragon for their midgame before break riding to create a game-winning play of two 23000+ power attacks that can't be guarded with grade 0 units, partially answering the slow buildup Nouvelle is faced by.

Interestingly, many decks in the format are now gravitating towards 6-6 on draw to critical triggers, where in the past 12 critical had dominated the deckbuilding process. The change may be attributed in part to the higher number of moving pieces in each deck these days, with Eternal Bringer Griffin, Dragonic Burnout, Dragonic Overlord and his crossbreak ride all being considered essential parts of “The Яe-birth's” strategy, and Glendios similarly looking to assemble Ruin Magician, Praseodymium and several “Яeverse” cards into a single hand.

The eighth Battle City CS took place on March 21st in the gallery hall of the Eastern Cultural Center in Sakai city, and met its expected quota of 64 teams, charging the standard 3000 yen entry fee per team. First place in the tournament won three PlayStation 4 consoles, second place six boxes of VG-BT15: Infinite Rebirth and third place three 2000-yen iTunes cards. Third and fourth place in the tournament went to team Rotten Fighter BL4 (チーム腐-ファイターBL4) and team Amazing Party (ステキなパーティしましょ.)

The VGCS tournaments are a series of unofficial tournaments organized by fans and cardshops. Unlike Bushiroad's larger official tournaments, most VGCS events are done using a best of 3, Swiss tournament model. Turnout is typically 70-80 persons, but some events see 100 or more participants, all of whom compete using pseudonyms and internet handles rather than their real names as in official events.

News: Glendios Cardfighter Wins Second Tsurumai VGCS, Triple Kagerou Team Places Second in Eighth Battle City CS

This weekend brings an increased prevalence of Glendios decks with it, following on the build's initial momentum earlier this March. The second Tsurumai and eighth Battle City Vanguard Championships both concluded over the 21st and 22nd, with Link Joker fighters making a lasting impression in the top brackets of each tournament. The build's impact has varied immensely based on region, achieving greater visibility within central Japan in Gunma prefecture, than in Hokkaido to the north, where Nouvelle Vague has a better hold on the format.

The second Tsurumai CS had 59 participants in all, with the top 4 going to Glendios, Dragonic Overlord, Glendios and Revenger cardfighters. This isn't the first victory for Glendios fans; the deck had been previously spotlighted in competitive play at the head of the Fireball VGCS earlier this month, under the command of tournament champion Kado. The main difference between Kado and Tsurumai winner Red Deer's decklists are that Kado was more willing to play around Omega Lock. His decklist used Cold Death Dragon where Red's uses Colony Maker, with the intent being to take the initiative away from his opponent by forcing them to put a Locked card into play, but with the caveat that he needed to be able to cast Omega Lock on that very turn to prevent the opponent from gaining card advantage in the long run.

This works better with the World End alternate win condition because otherwise opponents can voluntarily choose to keep their rearguard circles open until Omega Lock fizzles to prevent the auto-win from being initiated, but Deer's decklist is geared to take advantage of how Omega slows the game down without necessarily needing to win through it. Colony Maker leads into Dust Tail Unicorn or Ruin Magician/Praseodymium depending on the conditions. Ninjin's decklist was built similarly, but with two extra Reverse cards for 14 grade 3s and just 12 and 6 grade 1s and 2s, straining the limits of established concepts of deckbuilding.

Interestingly, among those grade 3s was a copy of Dragonic Overlord “The Яe-birth.” It has frequently been assumed by westerners that “The Яe-birth” cannot be used with Glendios support because it does not have the specific phrase “Я” in its card name, but in Japan “The Яe-birth” is instead seen as being compatible because the supporting units' card text only specifies the backward R character, Я, in card names, and because the phonetic reading for Яe-birth and Яeverse are the same リバース Ribaasu. It's uncertain how the English-language incarnation of the card will handle the intentional double meaning behind “The Яe-birth,” as there are no standards in English for phonetic guides.

Second place cardfighter Sousuke reached the top bracket using a Dragonic Overlord the “The Яe-birth” deck, with notable similarities to the makeup of Beast Deity Cup champion Hisui's deck. Both cardfighters agreed for the most part on the grade 2 and 3 makeup of their builds, with Dragonic Burnout and Berserk Dragon being favored units for their on-call field control that makes use of the rearguard circles Яe-birth Locks, but Hisui prioritized accessing the break ride with Eternal Bringer Griffon more where Sousuke went for raw draw power using Calamity Tower Wyvern and Gojo's card changing to ditch excess draw triggers.

Meanwhile the eighth Battle City Trio CS concluded recently with first place going to a Glendios, Dragruler and Glendios team while second went to three Kagerou cardfighters running two Nouvelle Vague and one Overlord decks. Third place was a makeup of Glendios, Blue Storm and Kagerou; deck lists are not yet available, but the Blue Storm build is suspected to be a Maelstrom build along the same lines as the one that recently placed second in the first Sapporo VGCS. The success of a triple Kagerou team points to the mutual effectiveness of separate but contemporary Kagerou decks, even in spite of Nouvelle being generally regarded as king among them. With Dauntless Dominate Dragon “Я” likewise hanging around in tournament results, many are eyeing Kagerou as a mainstay clan for the 2014 tournament season on both sides of the water.

News: Galaxy Blaukluger, Raging Form and Nouvelle Vague Place in Seventh Battle City Tournament, Link Joker Takes Third Tachikawa CS

The results from Japan's most recent unofficial team tournament have been published, with team KHP winning the seventh Battle City Sakai VG Trio ChampionShip. KHP's members played a combination of the Blau series, Raging Form and Dragonic Nouvelle Vague decks, following the recent trends of Nova Grappler's rise among the established Kagerou and Shadow Paladin decks. Unlike past Blaukluger decks, KHP forward Gocchan's build emphasized the original Blaukluger as part of a crossride-centric strategy, shifting away from the focus on Mond Blaukluger that contemporary cardfighters have made, and away from the more aggressive break ride format in general. Team midfighter Tokumicchan has card-for-card emulated the deck of reigning national champion Lee Innyeng, importing its Claudas- and Blaster Dark-centric strategies and to some degree finalizing the decklist with his success.

The seventh Battle City Sakai CS was held at 10:00 AM JST on the 16th, and conducted between 64 teams (192 persons) with an entry fee of 3000 yen per team. Each team member was required to use a different clan, but mixing clans within one deck was permitted. The first place team in the tournament received a voucher for an entire case (sixteen boxes) of VG-BT15: Infinite Rebirth, to be released in Japan on the 28th. Second place received a voucher for nine boxes of the set, while third received a voucher for six, and fourth for three boxes. The eighth Battle City CS is currently slated for March 21st.

The Third Tachikawa VGCS also concluded just recently, with Link Joker cardfighter Shiimo taking first place against all odds. Since the rise of Nouvelle Vague and Minerva in the BT14-on format, Link Joker has taken a backseat to competing decks, with usage scaling back with each tournament until it now accounts for just under 6% of the total number of decks played at Tachikawa. This is a strong contrast to the West Tokyo CS of one booster set back, where Link Joker made up one-fourth of all decks played in the tournament. So while Shiimo's Chaos Breaker deck is familiar territory to many, the circumstances are not.

The Revengers, Link Joker and Eradicators, which not long ago had dominated competitive play at the height of their shared era, have dwindled down to just 6, 5 and 3 decks out of the 86-person tournament. Kagerou and Genesis firmly dominated the third Tachikawa VGCS, building on a string of victories for the two clans. While Genesis is unanimously held together by the Sacred Regalia series led by its restanding grade 3 Artemis and on-soulblast superior call units Chamomile and Melissa, Kagerou is divided between cardfighters playing Dauntless Dominate Dragon “Яeverse” and those using the grade 4 Dragonic Nouvelle Vague. Nouvelle's future was uncertain after the keystone first vanguard that enabled its easy Nouvelle Roman plays, Lizard Soldier Conroe, was restricted last January, but after its success in the Kansai VGCS general confidence in Nouvelle has been restored. Like faruke's Nouvelle deck before them, Shiimo and his fellow top 8 Nouvelle cardfighters were using 4 copies of Calamity Tower Wyvern to make effective use of their soul and counterbalance the loss in consistency from Conroe being hit. Contrast this with Ucchii from the seventh Battle City CS, who played a more conventional deck that ignored the core issue altogether.

In a moment of self-aware humor, the Tachikawa CS homepage listed the Nouvelle Vagues in Tiisupin and Rabbit's decks as grade 3s--not a hard idea to grasp, considering that with the supporting grade 1 Roman in the format, this is how the majority of Japanese cardfighters have treated Nouvelle both before and after Conroe's restriction.

In our final story for tonight, the comprehensive rules for the English edition of the Cardfight!! Vanguard TCG have been amended to officially define Lock and Unlock. The most important definitions provided are that Locked cards are not treated as the same cards as they previously were, they do not have a defined stand or rest position but always Unlock as stand, and that the circle they are on is also modified into a separate type of circle. For more thorough information, see relevant sections 10.1.21 and 10.1.23.
