Press Release: Record Sales of Cardfight!! Vanguard Winter-Spring Releases

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Los Angeles, CA (March 7, 2014) – In less than a month after the release dates, three of the most recent Cardfight!! Vanguard expansions are now sold out. These expansions, released in February, are the highly anticipated Trial Deck Vol. 10: Purgatory Revenger, Trial Deck Vol. 11: Star-vader Invasion and Booster Pack Vol. 12: Binding Force of the Black Rings.
The introduction of the new “Link Joker” narrative and the popularity of the newly-released clan, along with tie-ins to the themed Cardfight!! Vanguard Team League 2014 “Invasion” campaign resulted in an unprecedented surge of purchases from retailers across the world. Despite an increased print run for all three products, both Trial Decks and the Booster Pack sold out within two weeks of their release dates in February.
Director of Bushiroad South East Asia and Bushiroad USA, Mr. Masayuki Goto, shared, “We are very pleased with this milestone for our new expansions and we hope that players and retailers alike will enjoy our line-up of products for this season together with many big events this year.”
A second print run is scheduled to keep up with the high demand for these three expansions and Bushiroad will make every effort to ensure there is no shortage of product on the market.
Cardfight!! Vanguard was recently ranked 5th in both the “Top 10 Hobby Channel Collectible Games” and “Top 5 Collectible Games Over-all” for Summer 2013*, and had a strong showing in the top hobby game picks of 2014**, securing 6 out of 11 spots for all titles, including Weiβ Schwarz and the newly-released Future Card Buddyfight on ICV2.

News: Fireball VGCS Decklists, Hakata and Sapporo Tournaments Dominated by Kagerou, Post-BT15 Aqua Force Emerges

The third Laketown Vanguard Championship decklists went up on Card Shop Fireball's official blog early yesterday morning, showcasing some of the first competitive decks of the Infinite Rebirth-on format. Tournament winner Kado's “Ω” Glendios deck is of particular interest in part because it's the first Glendios deck seen in tournament play, and also due to its unusual composition, running a huge count of twelve grade 3s and just seven grade 2s. Previously only Aqua Force, Dimension Police and Nova Grappler cardfighters tended to run grade 3 heavy decks on a regular basis, due to their variety of grade 3 options and necessity for two or more gameplans in one deck, but Glendios is a different beast entirety. Some concern over the validity of the results has been expressed due to this Fireball CS only seeing a turnout of 34 persons when 60~80 is more common in VGCS events, but now that the decklist is visible it's clear that a thorough amount of work was put into its construction.

The high grade 3 count was generally anticipated by experienced Link Joker cardfighters due to the overall strategy of the build. “Ω” Glendios decks as a rule now rely on either Omega himself or Star-vader “Яeverse” Cradle Cradle; both of these boss cards use Link Joker's signature Lock mechanic by calling cards with  “Яeverse” in their name to rearguard circles, and accordingly can make any “Яeverse” into a Link Joker unit to promote synergy. In order to use their skills effectively, a high grade 3 count is necessary. Kado also exploited this to his advantage by running six different “Яeverse” cards, five of them as single copies, in order to obscure exactly how many he was running from his opponents. The core Omega strategy hinges on using Glendios in tandem with Ruin Magician, Praseodymium, Rubidium, Magnet Hollow, any two Reverse cards and the first vanguard World Line Dragon. Prior to hitting grade 3, Glendios' early game primarily revolves around trading Reverse cards in hand at the beginning of each ride phase with World Line's skill to search for other Link Joker units, avoiding the problems associated with failing to reach grade 2, and ideally replacing the Reverse cards discarded with other Reverse cards, primarily Cradle.

Magnet Hollow is the build's most valuable grade 2 because of how it instantly adds a Reverse card to hand for a single counterblast when its attack hits, which lets Glendios or Cradle Lock one card per turn, and Glendios can then use its limit break to cast Omega Lock and prevent the opponents' cards from unlocking for one turn. Omega can then get those Reverse cards back by calling Ruin Magician, who for counterblast 1 returns a Reverse card from the drop zone to the hand for each other Reverse on a rearguard circle, and unflip the damage with Praseodymium who operates on the same principle as Ruin. Rubidium is a special card that changes the target of the opponent's attack a rearguards with Reverse in its name, which compensates for the lower overall shield of a grade 3-heavy deck, and prevents skills that only activate when attacking a vanguard from going off.

Although these tactics were conceived with the idea in mind of using Omega Glendios' ultimate break skill to achieve an alternate win condition--automatically winning at the beginning of the main phase if the opponent has 5 or more Locked cards in play--the real outcome of fights with Omega have varied immensely. Being restricted to Locking a single card each turn (and only able to potentially subvert that with the occasional Cold Death Dragon who gives the opponent a card from their deck in the Locked position) achieving World End is frequently an unrealistic goal. Instead Glendios' main strategy has been to stall the opponent out by being able to Lock both frontrow rearguards with relative ease and cast Omega Lock while recycling the discarded cards, immensely slowing down games until they take double the amount of turns to complete. Since Omega powers up all Reverses to have a 15000 power base, the opponent is denied the ability to use their rearguards while Omega's strike for higher numbers on average.

The key weakness to the Glendios deck is its reliance on having Reverse cards available. None of these card skills can activate without Reverse cards already existing on the field or in the hand. Because of this, World Line Dragon's Reverse-discarding skill is not always an optimal play even though there's a limited window that it can be used inside of. Having those Reverse becomes a double-edged sword by enabling stronger plays while weakening Omega's ability to defend earlier in an aggressive format. At the third Hakata VGCS, Nouvelle Vague has continued a steady train of dominance under first place cardfighter Seishirou, while Dragruler-Raging Form and Minerva fighters are managing to hold their own with it in the top ranks of tournament play. In particular, the new definitive Revenger deck is clearly emerging in these early tournaments. Taking a leaf from EX's deck from the Half Moon VGCS, the basic framework of Kaakun's build was two of each Phantom grade 3 paired with four copies of Raging Form Dragon and a supporting rearguard lineup of double Judgebaus into double Sword Breakers with multiple ways to superior call the second Judgebau Revenger through Mana, Tartu and Darkbond, and the paired rearguards Rakia and Lukea who power up when low-grade rearguards are called. The most surprising shared feature of these decks is the absence of Blaster Dark Revenger, whose field control and unflipping with Dorint once made him a staple of the Revenger build. You can jump to the decklists directly by searching the page for [3HVGCS]

The third Hakata VGCS had 93 participants in all, with a burgeoning number of Glendios cardfighters alongside the established Nouvelle and Shadow Paladin decks. A complete breakdown of the tournament is below;
34 Kagerou (25 Nouvelle 9 Overlord)
18 Shadow Paladin
9 Link Joker (5 Glendios 4 Chaos Breaker)
8 Genesis
6 Gold Paladin
6 Pale Moon
3 Aqua Force
3 Narukami
2 Dimension Police
2 Nova Grappler
1 Neo Nectar
1 Royal Paladin

Meanwhile word has gotten out that Kagerou is likewise dominating the first Sapporo VGCS over on the opposite end of the archipelago. Sapporo's top 8 was made up of three Kagerou, three Link Joker, one Shadow Paladin and one Aqua Force cardfighters. As this is the first major headway for Aqua Force in the wake of BT15, many observers are eager to see where professional cardfighters have developed the clan in the first two weeks of the new format.

The VGCS tournaments are a series of unofficial tournaments organized by fans and cardshops. Unlike Bushiroad's larger official tournaments, most VGCS events are done using a best of 3, Swiss tournament model. Turnout is typically 70-80 persons, but some events see 100 or more participants, all of whom compete using pseudonyms and internet handles rather than their real names as in official events.

News: Glendios Cardfighter Wins Fireball VGCS, “The Яe-birth” and Tempest Bolt Top in Kitakyuu Championship, EB07 Sneak Preview for April

Four different VGCS tournaments took place over the weekend; the third Laketown VGCS held by card shop Fireball, the Juushinhai "Beast Deity Cup" tournament held at Minami-Koshigaya in Saitama, the Kitakyuu CS, and the Half Moon CS at Honchouku hall in Shibuya. The decklists from Fireball and Juushinhai are still pending, but the results of the tournaments are already known without them. The Fireball CS is getting attention for being the first publicized victory for Star-vader "Ω" Glendios, run by Link Joker cardfighter Kado. Turnout was relatively low, with just 34 persons attending due to poor weather, and twelve among them playing Kagerou decks, but Kado's success with Omega is still being treated cautiously as what may be the first of many shots fired.

The Beast Deity Cup meanwhile was taken by a fighter reportedly playing a Dragonic Overlord "The Яe-birth" deck. Being just one among fourteen Kagerou cardfighters that held a majority stake in the tournament, Hisui's Overlord made it to the top 4 alongside two other Overlord and a Beast Deity cardfighter. Tournament organizer Shaon tweeted that the deck recipes will go up within the next few days. The remaining 45 decks entered broke down as follows;
14 Kagerou (6 Overlord 4 Dragonic Nouvelle Vague 1 Dauntless Dominate Dragon "Я")
11 Nova Grappler ( 9 Ethics Buster 1 Asura Kaiser 1 Blau series)
4 Pale Moon (all Luquier)
4 Link Joker (3 Chaos Breaker Dragon 1 Omega Glendios)
4 Gold Paladin (3 Gancelot Zenith 1 Alfred)
3 Shadow Paladin (2 Raging Form Dragon 1 Dragruler Phantom)
1 Genesis
1 Dimension Police
1 Megacolony
1 Narukami
Over at the Kitakyuu CS first place went to Botan using Dragonic Nouvelle Vague, while second place was taken by Sutepo!'s [sic] Tempest Bolt Dragon. Nouvelle is a familiar face in professional play for his widespread success in fan tournaments and for putting Conroe on the restricted list, and Botan has not strayed far from established conventions. The one experimental point in his deck is the use of the BT15 break ride print of Dragonic Overlord in combination with Dauntless Drive Dragon, giving him multiple options for a self-standing break ride skill prior to going into Nouvelle Vague for his endgame, and the ability to break ride multiple times with different types of skills coming out of that. Vague by himself already attacks with a high base power, negates the opponent's damage triggers and can't be defended with grade 0 units, so attacking twice typically takes out around 6~8 cards in a single turn. The card is scheduled to hit American shores in June. Tempest Bolt meanwhile has been a very rarely seen competitor in the BT14-on format, but has been praised for the innovations that he's brought to the game. A base 11000 Narukami grade 3, his continuous skill gives him +2000 power for each unoccupied rearguard circle during his fighter's turn, so that any field commitment on her part decreases Tempest's final power even though it improves field position, while withholding cards from play can become advantageous for how it improves the vanguard's independent attack.

Furthermore, Tempest's limit break retires all rearguards in play, crippling decks that can't regain card advantage easily at the price of his own card lead. This has been instrumental for Narukami's Overlord matchup in the new format as Dragonic Overlord “The Яe-birth” needs five rearguards to Lock to use his limit break, thus necessitating the dedication of five new rearguards and demanding more field dedication from Kagerou fighters than from Tempest's, and somewhat less so for the Nouvelle matchup due to part of that deck's vanguard-intensive strategy relying on frontrow field presence to make his trigger cancelling skill more effective. Sutepo!'s success is made all the more impressive by him being just one of two Narukami cardfighters in the house. The Kitakyuu decklists can be jumped to directly by searching the page for [KKVGCS]. The total clan breakdown for the tournament was as follows;
20 Kagerou
10 Shadow Paladin
7 Gold Paladin
4 Link Joker
4 Pale Moon
3 Royal Paladin
3 Megacolony
3 Genesis
2 Nova Grappler
2 Narukami
1 Nubatama
1 Angel Feather
1 Oracle Think Tank
1 Neo Nectar
1 Bermuda
1 Murakumo
Lastly, in the Half Moon team CS on March 1st, a team comprised entirely of Shadow Paladin Revenger cardfighters won the tournament, with second place going to a team comprised of Aqua Force, Holy Shine Dragon, Dragonic Overlord, Monarch Sanctuary and Dauntless Dominate fighters. The championship used a somewhat unorthodox model, with no clan restrictions, and 32 teams of five cardfighters competing in a format where a team would win as soon as three of its members had won their games. The tournament began with four rounds of Swiss draw followed by a cut to the top 8 teams. Entry was 5000 yen per team (1000 yen per person or $50 total) with first place getting five Nintendo 3DS systems, second place getting ten boxes of VG-BT15: Infinite Rebirth and third place five boxes. The total prize pool was thus around 160,000 yen or $1500.

Although the composition of every team member's deck is not known, one member "Ekusu" photographed his list to the net, showing a combination of Phantom cards and Raging Form Dragon with the popular Sword Breaker from BT15 to work in conjunction with the Phantom support. The decklist is provided below under the heading [HMVGCS].

In other news, the Sneak Preview tournament for VGE-EB07: Mystical Magus is coming up next month on April 4, 5 and 6, and will feature Pentagonal Magus as the participation prize for taking part in the tournament. Pentagonal was originally distributed with volume 6 of the manga in Japan, and is generally accepted as the most suitable partner unit to the deck's break ride Hexagonal Magus, as her limit break effectively gives her an extra critical trigger by granting her +5000 power and +1 critical if her cardfighter can successfully guess the top card of the deck when she attacks, and Hexagonal's break ride skill allows them to look at and rearrange the top two cards before then. Fittingly, the mat for the seventh extra booster will feature Hexagonal Magus, with artwork provided by Itou Akira.

News: March 2nd Broadcast Explains Legion Mechanic, Raizers and Musketeers to See Support in BT16

Following the end of Link Joker earlier today Bushiroad aired a special broadcast on NicoNico Douga, discussing the upcoming Legion Mate season and some of the card mechanics therein. The program was introduced by Doctor O, with the anime being addressed by the voices of Sendou Aichi and Kai Toshiki, Yonaga Tsubasa and Satou Takuya; Satou confirmed for the fans that Kai will be the main protagonist of Legion Mate, and to Yonaga's distress that Aichi will be disappearing during the season.

When things came back to Doctor O, the viewers were treated to two jumbo-sized replicas of the upcoming TD14: Seeker of Hope cards. The deck's key grade 2, Blaster Blade Seeker, is a variation on the established field control formula. Like the traditional Blaster Blade he can retire a grade 2 or greater rearguard, but this is only when placed on a rearguard circle and costs just a single counterblast as opposed to past incarnations' two. Blade Seeker may require a Seeker vanguard to do so, but this is difficult to confirm from NND's low resolution.

What really drew surprise from the broadcast's 18,000 viewers was the explanation of the new Legion Mate mechanic and the skill of Seeker, Sacred Wingal. Sacred Wingal's Activate skill is not a limit break, but instead activates Legions it to Blaster Blade Seeker by matching up their Legion icons. Wingal can pay a cost of shuffling four units from the drop zone into the deck, to become joined with Blade Seeker as one unit with a total base power of 20000. Wingal's autoskill then triggers at the moment that it has been Legioned, letting it superior call a grade 2 or greater Seeker from the deck.

How exactly Legion Mate interacts with established mechanics is unknown. Legion units becoming a 20000 power base during their own turn was described as a typical attribute of the Legion Mate mechanic, so presumably most if not all Legion cards for this upcoming season will be a base 11000 grade 3 and base 9000 grade 2.

Interestingly, the introduction of Legion Mate may mark either an end or shaky coexistence with limit break; addressing the longstanding issue of the game's pace becoming more oriented around being at 4 damage over time, the only condition observed on Legion Mate skills is the ability to have a Mate on the field. Legion activates when a vanguard and rearguard with paired Legion icons are matched up, which gives their cardfighter greater freedom of choice on when to use skills, and rewards successful timing for using Legion Mate when the opponent is already at higher damage by giving them innately greater power to work with. Conversely, using Legion too early wastes a skill that can only be used as many times as the Mate unit can be played from the hand.

Doctor O revealed several different upcoming pairs of Legion units, including those from Brawler of Friendship and an alternate set of Legion cards from Seeker of Hope, but what drew the most excitement were the units from VG-BT16: Legion of Dragons and Blades. Nova Grappler will be receiving a pair of Raizer units with the new mechanic to round out their build, while Neo Nectar will start the season off with paired Musketeer units.

Additionally, Doctor O assured everyone that Tokura Misaki will also be returning with Legion cards, much to the relief of her voice actor, Kitta Izumi. What clan she will be using is unknown. Many fans are clamoring for her to return to Oracle Think Tank while others have suggested she stay with Genesis, but neither clan is currently scheduled to be supported by BT16.

The program was closed out by Morishima Shuuta, voice of Shin Nitta, who asked the audience to help him with the cheer "Ride the Vanguard!" The cards covered by the NND conference will be given better coverage in the upcoming seventh issue of Monthly Bushiroad magazine. A recording of the broadcast will go up tomorrow.

3/3/2013 Update: The broadcast has been uploaded to YouTube. Highlights include an explanation of the Legion mechanic at the 22 minute mark, Blaster Blade Seeker and Sacred Wingal's debut at 23:37 as well as the introduction of Raizer and Musketeer support from 28:19 on.

News: TV Tokyo Commercial Reveals Plot for Legion Mate, Nouvelle Vague to Hit International Shores in June

This morning Japanese TV channel TV Tokyo aired a commercial for the upcoming fourth season of Cardfight!! Vanguard, Legion Mate, sparking a flood of images and comments over Twitter from Japanese fans. TV Tokyo's official website also updated with a synopsis of the season's upcoming storyline:
Just days after a deadly fight against Link Joker that involved the whole world, everything is peaceful and the usual calm days have came back.
But, Kai Toshiki faces a surprising situation.
Sendou Aichi, the hero who saved the world from the invasion of Link Joker, suddenly disappeared. Along with peoples' memory of his existence…While there are few clues to go by, Kai will seek Aichi with only the proof of their bond, “Blaster Blade” and a Royal Paladin deck.
Fighters named the “Quatre Knights” appear before Kai. The four fighters—Gaillard, Neve, Ratie and Serra—are world class fighters in Vanguard.
They use a mysterious power and tell Kai to give up seeking Aichi. What is their purpose…?! And what is their relationship with Aichi…?!Receiving the new power "Legion," Kai's fight to get Aichi back, starts now!!
The commercial for Legion Mate showed Kai's role as the protagonist prominently, featuring him alongside the surviving Team Q4 members, as well as Naoki, Ren and Miwa. Naoki and Kai's new friendship has been emphasized in the commercial, while a poster for the series seen above features the antagonistic Quartre Knights, each of which appears to be a counterpart of a member from Q4.

Another image from the commercial gave early details on some of the cards from TD14: Seeker of Hope, revealing that Blaster Blade Seeker will be a grade 2 with 9000 power and 5000 shield, and that Sacred Wingal will be a base 11000 power grade 3. Legion Mate is set to air on March 9 in Japan, exactly one week after Link Joker ends on March 2 this weekend.

In international news, two extra boosters were confirmed for an English release today, with VGE-EB08: Champions of the Cosmos and VGE-EB09: Divine Dragon Progression getting a dual release on June 6, 2014. The primary draws of EB08 are its crossride units Immortal Asura Kaiser and Galaxy Blaukluger, along with the legacy support for the old cards that they bring. Since Champions of the Cosmos' Japanese release last November the Galaxy Blaukluger deck has gradually climbed up the ranks of VGCS tournaments to become the dominant competitive option for Nova Grappler, much as the original Blaukluger had back in 2011.

Divine Dragon Progression is based around the cards used by Kai Toshiki in the more recent volumes of the manga and is the better known set by far, chiefly for the infamy of its cover card Dragonic Nouvelle Vague. As the first fully implemented grade 4 unit, Nouvelle Vague's designers are held to have overcompensated for its unwieldy nature with extensive options for deck searching and field control, and skills that both prevent it from being guarded with grade 0 units and passively nullify the opponent's trigger checks. These qualities were not in the card's original intention--Itou had envisioned Nouvelle as nullifying both players' trigger checks and not having the Twin Drive!! ability--and have snowballed along with Kagerou's self-standing break ride support to create a deck that can attack multiple times with its vanguard while preventing the opponent from guarding those attacks while also sitting on an unnaturally high 13000 base power and destroying the opposing rearguards to prevent them from fighting back. Nouvelle has thus superseded Link Joker in Japan as the dominant deck of competitive play, leading to the restriction of Lizard Soldier Conroe who was a major linchpin in the deck's consistency. The build is currently considered wounded but playable, as it has continued to dominate Japanese Vanguard Championships alongside Omniscience Regalia Minerva, accounting for up to 18% of all decks played in some cases.

EB08 will feature a promotional print of Nova Grappler's original critical trigger, Shining Lady, with her 2011 anime artwork as a box topper, while EB09 will get a print of Dragon Dancer Arabella.

2/28/2014 Update: The Nova Grapplers will also be receiving a special Sneak Preview playmat that can be won by participating in the extra boosters' dual launch event. This time the playmat will be of Galaxy Blaukluger. Unlike with EB04 and EB05, there will be a second playmat representing the Kagerou side. Which unit will be featured is unknown but it is speculated to be Dragonic Nouvelle Vague. Those that take part in the Sneak Preview will also receive a PR/101EN Chain Blaster Dragon. Back in Japan, Chain Blast had been a Monthly Bushiroad promo, and was known for his ability to simultaneously retire three of the opponent's rearguards by discarding two grade 3 units with his limit break, while searching for those grade 3s with his non-limit break skill. Sneak Preview events will be taking place around the world on May 30, May 31 and June 1, with the final dates determined by the hosting store.

In other news, VG-BT15: Infinite Rebirth officially released in Japan today. While there was some trouble with international sellers in Singapore stocking the set before the street date, the surprises surrounding the set were limited this time due to all of BT15's RRR and RR-rarity cards being known from promotional materials released ahead of time. What is drawing the most attention at this time is that the newly released Triple Reverse rarity card, Star-vader “Ω” Glendios, is now selling for as high as 6000~8000 yen (approx. $60~$80 in US money) higher than any other single card in the history of the game, including its immediate predecessor Chaos Breaker Dragon who sold for as most as a Japanese booster box at release. Although Link Joker usage has waned considerably since the release of Dragonic Nouvelle Vague in Japan, Glendios has gotten particular attention not just for its unique rarity but also due to the host of supporting units that have helped it along, in particular Cold Death Dragon and “Яeverse” Cradle.

Glendios' core strategy is built around its alternate win condition, having all of the opponent's rearguards Locked at the beginning of its cardfighters' main phase while also having five damage, but requires repeatedly discarding “Я” cards to use its highly defensive Omega Lock ability that prevents cards from opening during the end phase. The disadvantage to this is that prior to “Я” Cradle, all Reverse cards came from other clans and Glendios could only make Reverse cards already on the field into Link Joker units, so the deck had a crippling weakness in that it was forced to run between 12 and 16 grade 3s with many of them being of the wrong clan and having the Lord skill that prevents them from attacking unless Glendios is on the vanguard circle. “Я” Cradle neutralized this by giving both a Reverse card to Link Joker so that only a limited number of cards from other clans would need to be used, and also sharing his ability to turn Reverse units into Link Jokers. Meanwhile Cold Death Dragon is a grade 2 that when called can put the top card of the opponent's deck into play Locked for counterblast 1, on the condition that they already have a Locked card. This makes it easier to achieve the deck's win condition as the opponent does not have the option of leaving some circles empty to prevent cards from being Locked. With the addition of Ruin Magician and Praseodymium, grade 1 units that can add Reverse cards back to the hand from the drop zone and unflip damage respectively, the Glendios build has evolved into an effective alternate strategy that has even secured independence from Infinite Zero Dragon, but some have criticized it as lacking interaction with the game compared to Chaos Breaker or Nebula Lord and shutting the opponent down too heavily to promote interesting gameplay.
