1st Place: Uchida/ウチダCompared with Guld's third-place deck from the 1st TraCaider VGCS, Uchida's deck is almost identical save for his choice to run Wingal over Lion Mane Stallion. Although Lion Mane and Wingal can both make 23k columns--with Akane for Lion Mane and Blaster Blade for Wingal--the additional 5k from King of Knights' superior call means Blaster Blade can actually reach 28k, a more important guard threshold in Standard for how it forces the opponent to use a Heal Trigger or two guardians.

Royal Paladin tops Card Kingdom Akiba tournament
Yesterday at Card Kingdom's Akiba branch in Chiyoda, Tokyo, Royal Paladin cardfighter Uchida made first out of 37 participants with a Soul Saver-King of Knights deck. Card Kingdom is one of the bigger card shop chains in Japan, thought to be one of the inspirations for Card Capital in the Vanguard anime series.

Today's Card Analysis: Funky Bazooka and Origin Rares
The Japanese Cards of the Day for May 24th, 2018, are the first Common out of V-Extra Booster 01: The Destructive Roar, Funky Bazooka, and the four Origin Rares from V-Booster Set 01: Unite! Team Q4, Blaster Blade, CEO Amaterasu, Dragonic Overlord, and Asura Kaiser.
With these kinds of strategies in mind, Funky Bazooka's skill helps build up for the final attacks of the turn and ensure the opponent is staring down the most powerful column last. Funky doesn't care if the cards are called from an effect or just called normally, and so can become a 17k booster with just one normal call and one superior call. If Spike Brothers get a new unit like Frozen Ogle, who can search and call after attacking, Funky has the potential to rack up those +5s over and over up to 37k. With Spike Brothers confirmed as a Force clan, the Gift Marker ensures boosting won't be necessary to reach high power levels quickly, and every new card called will benefit from the Gift. Take that 37 boost, factor in two Force Markers, and a Juggernaut Maximum remake that gets 10 instead of 5. Bloom.
The four Origin Rares have already been discussed at length in many previous articles, and there's no need to repeat these statements at this time. Instead, look to the distribution of Origin Rares: it appears to be two per case based on early openings, making these as rare as Special Parallels were in the BT01 days. Worth noting is that while Vanguard Rare and Special Vanguard Rare prints seemingly go to set cover cards by default (usually but not always manga bosses) ORs instead go to the faces of the first season. Based on this information, with Siefried, Hercules, and Gigarex as the cover cards of EB01 and thus its most likely VRs, the remaining ORs for 2018 would include at least Deathrex, Amon, Voidmaster, base form Daiyusha, and Maiden of Trailing Rose.
Others are harder to pin down due to unclear clan identities early in the game's history--Hell Spider, Giraffa, and Machining Stag Beetle were each the "face" of Megacolony at different points in 2011, while for Pale Moon it was a toss-up between Barking Manticore, Alice, Robert, and the grade 2 Crimson Beast Tamer. Exactly where Standard format will take each clan is unclear, but so far we've seen generally-focused support with few alternative deck options. Only Nova Grappler has had multiple distinctive deck types, with Perfect Raizer, Asura Kaiser, and the Hero deck each having some overlap but with preference given to their respective exclusives.
The previous Japanese Cards of the Day were Cat Butler and Blaster Blade.
V-Booster Set 01: UNITE! TEAM Q4 will launch in Japan May 25th, 2018, and in English June 22nd. It will be accompanied by sleeves based on Dragonic Overlord and Blaster Blade. V-Trial Deck 01: Sendou Aichi and V-TD02: Kai Toshiki will launch in English June 8th.
The first Extra Booster set of Standard, V-EB01: The Destructive Roar will launch in Japan June 29th, 2018, and August 2nd for the English-speaking world. The accompanying new anime series, codenamed "Origin," began airing May 5th, with an English-subtitled simulcast on both YouTube and Crunchyroll.
Funky BazookaBazooka is a powerful supporting grade 1 for Spike Brothers, a clan which emphasizes sending its rearguards back into the deck after they've attacked and superior calling to open rearguard circles mid-battle phase using one-for-one exchanges rather than plusses. The essential template for the clan since it was first fleshed out in Onslaught of Dragon Souls is to attack with units that send themselves back into the deck, then use a vanguard that superior call those same units out mid-battle phase. In 2011 this was Juggernaut Maximum and Highspeed Brakki paired with General Siefried, with Maximum swinging 16k (equivalent to an 18 today) for soulblast 1 and Siefried superior calling any grade 2 or greater units he drive checked to open rearguard circles. In 2012 Siefired was replaced by Dudley Emperor, who instead paid counterblast 2 on-attack to send two cards from hand to soul and search the deck for two units. Thus the gameplan was to swing 14/16 with Brakki/Maximum, return them to deck, and use Emperor's Limit Break to bring them right back out to swing 21k boosted. Dudley Emperor became the template for all future Spike Brothers boss cards to live up to--Grateful Catapult, Bloody Ogle, Rising Nova, and others.
AUTO [Rearguard Circle]: When your other rearguard is placed in the same column as this unit, this unit gets Power +5000 until end of turn.
Today's Card Analysis: Cat Butler and Blaster Blade
The Japanese Cards of the Day for May 23rd are one of the lowest-rarity cards and the highest-rarity card from V-Booster Set 01: Unite! Team Q4, the Common Cat Butler and the Image Ride Rare Blaster Blade.
When Cat Butler first debuted in Extra Booster 1: Comic Style Vol. 1 seven years ago, the card was seen as something of a joke. It was a conditional restand Itou had made for Miwa's deck in the manga that allowed him to get a dramatic second attack in with Boomerang Thrower, but being limited to grade 2 cards made it a highly situational grade 0 that hurt the consistency of one's deck, and the cost of retiring itself meant it was a net-neutral exchange to get an additional attack and drive check.Cat ButlerAUTO [Rearguard Circle]: At the end of the battle in which your vanguard's attack did not hit, [Cost: Soulblast 1, retire this unit] choose 1 of your units, it gets Power +3000 until end of turn, and if that unit is a grade 2 or less vanguard, Stand it.

That joke turned lethally serious thirty months later when Booster Set 16: Legion of Dragons and Blades introduced the Legion mechanic, which allowed one to have two cards on the vanguard circle by using a grade 3's Legion ability to combine it with a grade 2 card from the deck. The official ruling from Vanguard R&D was that, since at least one of your vanguards was a grade 2 while in Legion, Cat Butler's skill would meet its check timing and could be resolved to stand the vanguard at a net +1. This gave birth to one of the most terrifying decks of the format; Ultimate Raizer Mega-flare, who after boost swung ~26k 2 critical and restood if its attack didn't hit. Put two Butlers down and you were looking at six drive checks if the opponent kept blocking, otherwise they were forced to take 2 damage.Although for much of the format the deck was overshadowed in the public consciousness by the relentless dominance of Thing Saver Dragon, which made up for more than 40% of all decks played during its peak periods and secured many consecutive tournament tops, Cat Butler Raizers was an overwhelmingly problematic matchup that eliminated much of the interaction with the opponent and ultimately found itself on the restricted list.
It's questionable if the new Cat Butler will replace the old one in the Premium format, as the new Butler is restricted by soul while the old one simply worked. Thankfully, Standard doesn't need to worry about Legion. The ideal targets for Cat Butler in the new format are Cup Bowler or Iron Killer to make a 17k restander versus grade 2s vanguards and 12k bases, or Hi-powered Raizer Custom to get another chance at your on hit. One option is to attack with your vanguard unboosted to make it easier for the opponent to guard (or to take advantage of them having a higher base power than you) then pass any trigger effects onto their booster and restand the vanguard with Cat Butler for a second drive check. (e.g. you attack with Hi-powered for 9k vs a 10k vanguard, drive check a Critical Trigger, give the power to a grade 1 behind Hi-powered and the Critical to Hi-powered, then stand Hi-powered with Cat Butler and swing boosted for ~22k 2 crit.) Another niche use is to allow a vanguard Raizer Custom to attack twice on the very first turn of the game, as his hand-to-soul cost pays for Cat Butler's. In this case, you get no trigger checks and any damage triggers by the opponent are liable to ruin the play.
Unfortunately for the Butler, none of these strategies are inherently desirable. Staying on grade 2 isn't viable in the new format, and with no Legion grade 3s around there's no real incentive to run Cat Butler. He's an extra grade 0 that hurts your chance to ride successfully, and the only thing he brings to the table over simply riding to grade 3 is the extra attack. Twin Drive still works out to the same number of drive checks as a Cat Butler turn, but at a net increase rather than a neutral exchange that's negatively impacted by missing out on a turn of Twin Drive in the first place.
The second Card of the Day is the first Image Ride Rare, Blaster Blade illustrated and autographed by franchise creator Itou Akira. The mechanics of this card have already been discussed, but there's room to expand now that we know the full set of support for Royal Paladin in 2018.
CONT [Vanguard Circle]: If you have four or more rearguards, this unit gets Critical +1.Much ado was made about Blaster Blade's extra critical when the card was first leaked. The condition is fairly easy to meet via High Dog Breeder Akane or Conjurer of Mithril's superior call skills, and it does dramatically escalate the progress of the fight by potentially dealing 3-4 damage in a single turn and pressuring the opponent to guard. It also falls prey to one of Vanguard's fundamental balancing mechanics, counterblast. By giving the opponent so much damage so early, you actually risk being retaliated against with an overwhelming number of skills; give Kagerou too much damage too soon and you'll quickly be staring down Striken, Dragonic Overlord, Berserk Dragon, and Nehalem all going off in the same turn when they are normally balanced by their mutual exclusivity. By giving the opponent so much counterblast to work with, you undo their own limitations by making those skills no longer exclusive. What would have been a vanilla Berserk Dragon and Nehalem call instead becomes you losing two rearguards and the opponent getting to restand a 2 critical center.
AUTO [Vanguard/Rearguard Circles]: When placed, [Cost: Counterblast 1 & Soulblast 1] choose one of your opponent's rearguards in the front row, and retire it.
Then there's the issue that using Blaster Blade's retire skill slows down Soul Saver Dragon by a turn when you don't necessarily have much time beyond your second grade 3 ride to decide the game. Early testing has demonstrated that the retire skill is vital to taking out Burstraizer and other powerful rearguards in Nova Grappler, a matchup where SSD rarely comes into play, but in all other matchups Soul Saver is your primary closer. That means Blaster Blade's role in the Royal Paladin deck is for the most part as a vanilla call target for Alfred, and not for his critical or retire skills.
As for the Image Ride Rare itself, early case openings have shown the card is a 1-per-case print if it's present at all. That means one in twenty booster boxes--most cardfighters will be satisfied with their Trial Deck Blaster Blades. Thankfully, IMR remains a vanity rarity and not a functional one like VR or RRR.
The previous Japanese Card of the Day was Silent Tom.

Today's Card Analysis: Grime, Chrono Dran Z, and Blaster Blade
The Japanese cards of the day for April 30th, 2018, are three promotional cards being handed out at the 2018 Great Vanguard Festival in Japan: Grime, Chrono Dran Z, and Blaster Blade. Each card is done in the style of a full-art SP, with gold foiling on Grime and Chrono Dran.
Of the three, only Grime fits into our traditional analysis section. Rather than being new card reveals, these are respectively the final promotional cards of the G format and the first promo cards of Standard; what began seven years ago with PR/0001 Blaster Blade now ends with PR/0727 Chrono Dran Z, and begins anew from V-PR/0001 Blaster Blade.
(Technically, the promotional prints of Rananculus of Phantasmic Blue, Daybreak Scharhrot, and Battle Sister Florentine, that will be packaged in the Jaime Flowers character song CD are going to be the final final promo cards of G. But Dran is absolutely being presented at the festival as a symbolic gesture.)
(Worth noting is that in the manga's continuity, which the rebooted series is based on, Aichi sticks with Grime and Kai with Undeux throughout the entire first arc.)
Having FVs stay in the soul means no longer having an easy early game booster, resulting in less aggressive first turns. If you're dropping a grade 1 on the board this early, it's probably to boost rather than attack. Otherwise, it's too easy for the opponent to simply drop a trigger and guarantee you can't hit them that turn. What unique effects the new generation of First Vanguard will have is another can of worms--perhaps Royal Paladin could call a grade 1 when you ride over it (or just copying the vanguard outright to avoid exploits) and Oracle Think Tank letting you check the top card and put it on the top or bottom of the deck before drawing. How would one translate Kagerou's mechanics to an FV of this type, though? An on-ride retire can't work at a stage of the game where the opponent has no rearguards.
These are exciting times we live in. In just 25 days V-Booster Set 01 will hit the Japanese format, and at that time, we'll know everything. Are we prepared for the new era? Can we be prepared for the new era?
The previous Japanese cards of the day were Stardrive Dragon and Crested Dragon.

GrimeGrime's skill brings with it certain questions. Thus far, we've seen no Forerunner grade 0s in Standard format--units that move out from the soul when you ride over them. In the old format, units staying in the soul but still carrying effects were generally limited to ride chain cards, with the main exceptions being Hades Ringmaster clones and World Line Dragon. Grime and Lizard Runner Undeux could just be what you get at the Common level for grade 0s, in the same way that Shizuku clones worked in the previous format, and if so then we're likely to see Forerunner First Vanguards return at the Single Rare level. But this could also be a situation akin to the G Trial Decks, where what you see is the best you'll get for some time to come. It's partially a question of how realistic it is to expect Royal Paladin and Kagerou to have exactly identical FVs as their only option to start the game off.
AUTO: When you ride, draw a card.

Blaster Blade leaked
April 17th, 2018. An English product leak for V-Trial Deck 01: Sendou Aichi reveals the full skills of the Standard format Blaster Blade, hybridizing a number of different versions of the card from formats past.
Although some have expressed concern with regard to Blade's early critical and emphasis on swarming, Bushiroad's plan seems to be to push both fighters in a match to advance the game state as quickly as possible. Nowhere is this more evident than in the age-old Royal Paladin-Kagerо̄ rivalry; Royal Paladin swarms the field with Allen and Marron to fuel Blaster Blade's extra critical, but Kagerо̄ in turn punishes Royals by retiring their units with Burj, Bahr, and Berserk Dragon, trading counterblast for counterblast and damage for damage. Royals have a theoretical damage lead from Blaster Blade, but Kagerо̄ gets to power up off retiring their field with rearguard Vortex Dragon. Royal Paladin in turn has to put down more guard to defend in the late game, while Kagerо̄ conserves hand by needing to defend against fewer and less powerful rearguards after initiating their retires. Royals' constant drawing off of Allen and Marron helps alleviate the high guard requirements, but Dragonic Overlord swinging for 43k+ promises to break through that hand as it builds up instances of Force and Burj power. It's a phenomenally designed matchup defined by a string of trades and choices on what each fighter wants to keep and what they are willing to sacrifice--and where will it lead? The King of Knights and Dragonic Waterfall will have to tell us.
CONT [Vanguard Circle]: If you have four or more rearguards, this unit gets Critical +1.While the original Blaster Blade from 2011 could only retire grade 2 or greater units when placed on a rearguard circle, and gained the ability to retire any unit when placed on the vanguard circle, the reimagined card borrows Blaster Blade Liberator's front-row retire and gains a vanguard-critical skill that seemingly foreshadows Majesty Lord Blaster.
AUTO [Vanguard/Rearguard Circle]: When placed, by paying [Counterblast 1 & Soulblast 1] choose one of your opponent's rearguards in the front row, and retire it.

Bushiroad bringing back Vanguard beginner's guide and manga
When Bushiroad first set out to franchise Cardfight!! Vanguard seven years ago, they began by setting up workshops and demo locations across Japan where prospective players could try the game, and walk away both with a demo deck and a chapter of the manga.
This practice carried over when they brought the game westward, and many veteran players will recall seeing the beginner's guide (and its very rough translation compared to Vertical Inc.'s final release) at regional qualifiers, and other events. International versions of the manga used key art of Sendou Aichi under the influence of PSY Qualia for the front cover, and the back cover featured an ad for the then-new Extra Booster 03: Cavalry of Black Steel.
Like many of the game's older traditions, Bushiroad is bringing the beginner's guide back for the series' 2018 reboot. The new book carries the familiar "Not for sale" stamp, and is titled Let's Start Vanguard 2018. It features the unmodified first chapter of the manga, along with an updated players guide that explains the new Gift mechanics. Thanks to the manga's loose-approximation approach to cardfights, the story translates easily to the Standard ruleset new players are learning at the workshops, as author Itou Akira didn't dwell heavily on numbers for the introductory chapter. The beginner's guide will come with the same Blaster Blade promotional card currently being handed out with Stardrive Start Decks in Japan, and is being distributed for the first time at the Anime Japan 2018 convention.
