News: Omniscience Regalia Minerva Figure Goes on Sale this Month

This month is the long-awaited launch of Kotobukiya's Omniscience Regalia Minerva figure, first announced and put up for preorder in November 2014. Originally designed by Tony Taka, Minerva has been a popular subject for sleeves, playmats and other merchandise since her introduction in BT14: Brilliant Strike. Kotobukiya's rendition of Minerva is a 1/8th scale figure, measuring 220 millimeters (8.7 inches approx.) at her highest point, is made of PVC plastic and comes prepainted by the production studio's in-house workers.

Cardfight!! Vanguard figures have been a favorite subject of hobbyists in the past, with amateur garage kit productions of Majesty Lord Blaster, Super Dimensional Robo Daiyusha, and Eradicator Dragonic Descendant all finding their way into annual figure festivals. Unlike Minerva though, these figures were only produced on a small scale to be auctioned to private collectors, and not as commercial products officially licensed out to a major production house. The Minerva figure retails for 13800 yen, approximately $112 at the current exchange rate. Figures will go out on the 27th.

The only other officially licensed figures on the market are Goodsmile Company's Cardfight!! Vanguard Nendoroids of Sendou Aichi and Kai Toshiki, and their original Nendoroid Petits. The Aichi Nendoroid in particular has become especially notorious among collectors, as it can easily go for more than $150 on the secondhand market. Kai's figure sells for less than half that price.

News: Cat Butler to be Restricted on the 18th, Dragonic Descendant Removed from List

The official cf-vanguard webportal updated this morning to reflect new changes made to the Japanese restricted list. After several months of play in the current Raizer deck, the grade 0 Cat Butler has been restricted to being played at a maximum of two copies, limiting how consistently its skill can be pulled off. Meanwhile the once-infamous Dragonic Descendant has been taken off the list, after being restricted to two for the past year. Lizard Soldier Conroe and Barcgal remain restricted from being placed as the first vanguard. The new restrictions will take effect on August 18th.

Cat Butler has gained infamy internationally for making every Raizer Legion a restanding vanguard with a positive exchange in card advantage, retiring Butler to drive check an additional two cards. This has proven deadly in combination with their core grade 3, Ultimate Raizer Mega Flare. MF's extra critical encourages the opponent to guard it at all costs, and Cat Butler's skill only activates when the vanguard's attack does not hit, creating a consistent combo wherein the opponent is forced to accept multiple vanguard attacks rather than risk potentially game-ending damage.

Butler's restriction coincides with recent modifications made to the list for the English-language format, bringing changes instituted in Japan back during the height of Dragonic Nouvelle Vague's popularity.

Although the modification has answered the general dominance of Cat Butler Raizers, observant fighters have noted that the new restricted list does not address the rise of Thing Saver-Phantom Blaster “Abyss,” which has just recently come to prominence in the Japanese pro scene as a powerful hybrid deck.

News: Ozan Fincan Wins May BeNeLux Tournament with Chaos Breaker Dragon

Yesterday's BeNeLux ended with the fan-favorite Link Joker clan in first place, played by European cardfighter Ozan Fincan. Unusually for a fan competition, this month's BeNeLux was the first major tournament of the BT13-on format, with its top 8 showcasing several of the competitive favorites from Catastrophic Outbreak, in particular Link Joker's new trump card Chaos Breaker Dragon and the Nova Grappler Reverse unit, Ethics Buster "Яeverse." The BeNeLux tournaments are a line of unofficial competitions organized by the joint vanguard community of Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg. Although open to being held in any of the three countries' major cities, it is typically held in Antwerp, Belgium on a monthly to bimonthly basis.

Participation this month was high in spite of the latent controversies surrounding the last BeNeLux winner. With an Xbox 360 for first place as an incentive to participate, a total 28 participants joined the tournament, with clan usage breaking down as follows;
May 4th BeNeLux Clan Breakdown
6 Shadow Paladin
5 Narukami
4 Link Joker
3 Nova Grappler
2 Kagero
2 Dimension Police
1 Dark Irregulars
1 Genesis
1 Gold paladin
1 Angel Feather
1 Murakumo
1 Aqua Force
Chaos Breaker's successful debut was well forecasted by the greater community, as the card's unique ability to slow the pace of the game by cheaply Locking the opponent's cards, preserving Locks with its support unit Palladium, and then later retire those cards as they unlock to draw allows it to control the general flow of card advantage throughout a fight and prevent opponents from efficiently fighting back. Despite the presence of the new decks, the top 8 was generally dominated by Eradicator cardfighters, with Dragonic Descendant-Gauntlet Buster as the most played build of the top 8, and the tournament as a whole saw heavier Shadow Paladin presence than anything else.
May 4th BeNeLux Top 8
1. Ozan Fincan (Link joker - Chaos Breaker Dragon)
2. Daniel Gallardo (Eradicator - Descendant/Gauntlet)
3. Vincent De Baere (Eradicator - Descendant/Gauntlet)
4. Gillian van Sande (Dark Irregulars - Amon Reverse)
5. Frederik De Baere (Nova Grappler - Ethics Buster Reverse)
6. Corentin Janssens (Eradicator - Descendant/Gauntlet)
7. Andy Van den Ouwelant (Link Joker - Chaos Breaker Dragon)
8. Kim Geerinckx (Genesis - Fortuna)
Seventh place in the tournament is a familiar face for professional play, taken by none other than 2012 French regional champion Andy Van den Ouwelant. Van den Ouwelant made a strong showing in World Championship 2012, winning his regional title with a Spectral Duke Dragon deck played against William Astoul's Dragonic Lawkeeper, and after two years has continued to persevere in modern play by adapting to Link Joker alongside a host of other international cardfighters. Chaos Breaker's international tenure is projected to be short-lived, as VGE-EB09: Divine Dragon Progression is due early next month alongside the grade 4 unit that has proved to be the terror of Japanese play.

News: Fighter's Road 2013 National Championship Decklists, Restricted List to Go Unchanged

The official Japanese Cardfight portal updated with the decklists from the now-complete FR2013 national tournament, Japan's summer championship for this year. The fifth national champion is Pale Moon cardfighter Kokubo Hikaru, who is also the Asia Circuit Memorial Tournament regional champion for Nagoya, having qualified to participate with a Dragonic Descendant deck prior to the card's restriction, and then subsequently abandoned the deck after the institution of the modern restricted list in favor of Luquier “Я.” Fittingly, the runner-up in FR2013 is none other than Uemura Shouhei, the cardfighter who opened this tournament season with his worldchanging Dragonic Descendant build that has defined the Eradicators throughout this season, and Uemura has stuck to the deck since then. The cardfighters who opened the Fighter's Road 2013 national championship have now brought it to a close, and for the first time in Japanese history the national champion is not a Royal Paladin cardfighter. In fact, this is the first time ever that Royal Paladin has not been in Japan's top 3, and in a serious turnaround, Shadow Paladin has grown from being their less successful palette swap into the dominant Paladin deck of the era, surpassing Gold Paladin in sheer numbers and placing in third for the national finals under the command of Hirago Masaki.

Furthermore, a special announcement was made today that the Japanese restricted list will remain unchanged through September. While some were clamoring for additional restrictions to be placed on Eradicator decks, with much attention being put on Cho-ou for how he simultaneously retires the opponent's rearguards and fuels the soul for Rising Phoenix, this decision was likely made in light of Descendant's general decline among Japanese pros following BT12. The rise of Luquier, Nebula Lord, Raging Form and other decks as strong contenders in their own right has deeply upset what was previously a very set-in-its-ways format.

Part of Luquier Reverse's success is owed to her status as a hard counter to Descendant. When using Ionela and Irina's skills, what the Silver Thorn build is really doing is calling two units at once, one to a rearguard circle and another to the soul to store for later. Since the opponent can't retire the soul, cards like Cho-ou and Dragonic Deathscythe that are a strong part of Descendant's early setup fall flat in the long term, as through chainlocking her rearguards in succession, locking 1 to call 1 that she locks to call another, Luquier “Я”'s limit break can let her multiply one card into two, or up to five if she so feels the need to. That kind of strategy may appear overly defensive and not in line with the aggressive format initially, but the Descendant deck relies on the opponent not being able to survive its endgame strategy by swallowing up their hand with Gauntlet Buster or Descendant over two to three turns after taking a field lead. Luquier “Я” doesn't need to call from the hand to call new rearguards after her soul is set up in the early to midgame, so Descendant loses its main feature as Luquier saves up her hand to go for more turns than Eradicator decks can handle.

In the Junior championship, the success of the Dimension Police has already been strongly noted through junior champion Niida Kazuki's explanation of the deck earlier this week. Although Niida was originally shooting for the Doctor O Prize when he created his 15 grade 3 deck, he ended up taking the junior championship trophy unintentionally, using the devastating combination of Enigman Storm's grade security with Daikaiser's break ride to trigger Storm or Daiyusha's skills with Laurel for a self-standing 26000+ power critical 3 vanguard line that used its high grade 3 count to retire perfect defense cards, making certain that the opponent could only guarantee safety if they dropped three perfect defense cards at once against his attack and paid the cost for all of them. Because of its highly aggressive characteristics, the "Crazy Diamond" deck aims to take the opponent to six damage on turn 4, but because of how it is structured the deck also has an endemic weakness in that once the break ride has been triggered and the vanguard is no longer Daikaiser, if the following turn is survived then the game is over for the Dimension Police cardfighter, as there is no safety net or alternative strategy.

News: Luquier Reverse Wins Tachikawa Vanguard Championship

The decklists for the August 3rd Second Tachikawa Vanguard Championship are out, bringing with them a dark horse victory in VGCS champion Hibari's Luquier “Я” deck. Held at Hobby Station Tachikawa, the tournament drew 82 participants in all, with the top 4 being Pale Moon, Revenger, Eradicator and Spike Brothers cardfighters, while the top 8 contained three more Revenger decks, as well as one Majesty Lord Blaster build running 2 copies of Majesty with 1 Soul Saver Dragon, for 3 grade 3s in all. The final matches of the Tachikawa VGCS were uploaded to TwitCasting, a Japanese video sharing website geared towards mobile devices.

The VGCS tournaments are a series of unofficial tournaments organized by fans and cardshops. Unlike Bushiroad's larger official tournaments, most VGCS events are done using a best of 3, Swiss tournament model, with entry fees in the vicinity of 1000 yen per person that go toward grand prizes like booster boxes, Nintendo 3DS handhelds and other merchandise. Turnout is typically 70-80 persons, but some events see 100 or more participants, all of whom compete using pseudonyms and internet handles rather than their real names as at official events.
Deck Distribution: Total Attendance 82 Persons
Revengers 24 (15 with Creeping Dark Goat, 9 with Claudas)
Eradicators 19 (10 with Spark Kid Dragoon, 9 with Linchu)
Link Joker 7
Pale Moon 6

Dragonic Kaiser Vermillion 1
Great Nature 1
Ezel 1
Crimson Impact, Metatron 1
Majesty Lord Blaster 1
Scarlet Witch, CoCo 1
Although Japan's current format is known for its extremely aggressive gameplay, early on in the match the Minatsuki v. Hibari finals showed the two fighters dancing around one another considerably, while focusing on one another's rearguards and playing to a very slow buildup, fighting tooth and nail for each point of damage. Hibari showed considerable innovation in how he played his Reverse card, using the Miracle Pop Eva break ride in conjunction with Reverse's limit break to come back from a four card difference, locking two backrow rearguards behind his vanguard and one rearguard line to call two new ones to the front, then attacking with those rearguards and afterwards swapping them in with Eva's break ride to call a completely new column to his then-empty left lane. The Silver Thorn series' quick and accurate soul setup allowed him to prepare a constant pool of new units to call with Luquier “Я”'s skill, calling more soul-charging rearguards from the soul and then locking those units to bring out more opportunities.

In the second round Minatsuki became gradelocked at 0, quickly leading to a three-card disadvantage for the Revenger side, but he came back using Tartu and Darkbond Trumpeter's skills to superior call boosters. Even so, this couldn't hold up to Luquier's reliable strategy, so after his surprise comeback in the first round Hibari completely dominated the second, beating Raging Form 2-0.

News: Decklists for Chiba VGCS Released, Dudley Emperor in First, Nebula Lord in Fourth

The decklists from the Chiba Vanguard Championship were put out earlier today, providing a view of the top cardfighters and their decks from yesterday's VGCS. First place went to Hiroemon and his Spike Brothers deck; this build ran Dudley Emperor in conjunction with Bad End Dragger to launch a highly aggressive endgame, but built up to that point using Jelly Beans to search out key units like Dudley Mason and Dudley Dan. It runs 13 grade 3s, 13 grade 1s and just 7 grade 2s in a radical contrast to many of the popular decks of this current period, made possible by Jelly's search skill that can add any grade 2 or lower Dudley unit to the hand. Much like Tsukuyomi in the previous format, Dudley Emperor has come out as a surprising answer to the most popular deck of the period. Having previously been taken to first at the official FR2013 Hiroshima and Sapporo, and gone to second in Nagoya, the Spike Brothers appear to have finally hit their stride in professional play.

The top four cardfighters along with their decklists, as well as the total deck distribution of the tournament have been translated below. Second place went to Kousakimii with Eradicators, third to Yagyuu also with Eradicators, and fourth to wakisis (sic.) with Link Joker. The bottom four of the top eight were split among Revenger, Liberator and Eradicator fighters, and the VGCS subtournament was won by a Raging Form Dragon cardfighter. According to the data provided by the tournament sponsor, Raging Form was the most used deck in the tournament, with the Eradicators in second and Nebula Lord Dragon as the third most used.

Turnout is typically 70-80 persons, but some events see 100 or more participants, all of whom compete using pseudonyms and internet handles rather than their real names as in official events. News: Chiba Vanguard Championship Won by Spike Brothers, Eradicators in Second

7/21/13 Edit: Decklists are now up.

Tournament sponsor Hiwa Nyan has sent word out on Twitter that the first Chiba VGCS was won by a Spike Brothers cardfighter, speculated to be using the same Dudley Emperor-Bad End Dragger build that has been doing so well in the current Fighter's Road 2013 national tournament. Second place reportedly went to a Narukami cardfighter using an Eradicator deck, and while the exact build is unknown, the general assumption is that it will be another Dragonic Descendant variant. According to the Chiba VGCS' official Twitter, the decklists will be out tomorrow at the earliest, so the nature of these two decks cannot be set in stone until that time.

Turnout is typically 70-80 persons, but some events see 100 or more participants, all of whom compete using pseudonyms and internet handles rather than their real names as in official events. The Chiba VGCS had a capacity of up to 96 persons but the actual turnout is not yet known.

News: FR2013 Sapporo and Nagoya Decklists, Dudley Emperor and Raging Form Proliferate, Ancient Dragons Debut in Pro Play

The last regional decklists for Fighter's Road 2013 have gone out, confirming that the first place cardfighters from Sapporo and Nagoya's Open division tournaments, Nakamura Kousuke and Fukuno Hyouga, seized their respective titles using Dudley Emperor and Raging Form Dragon. Second place in Sapporo went to Nishihita Naoki's Descendant deck, while second in Nagoya went to Sasaki Daichi and his own Emperor build. Although outnumbered due to their late arrival, the sleeper hit of Dudley Emperor and surprising success of Raging Form have left a serious impact on the Japanese format. The combined deck representation from the winning lists of these two events shows 6 Dragonic Descendant, 5 Raging Form Dragon, 4 Liberator Garmore and 3 Dudley Emperor, 1 Ancient Dragon, 1 Majesty Lord Blaster, 1 Dragonic Overlord The End, 1 PR♥ISM, 1 Nebula Lord and 1 dedicated Vowing Saber Dragon “Я” decks. Following these tournaments, Raging Form Dragon's price has risen to being one of the most expensive RRRs in the Japanese format, at 2100 JPY/approximately 21 USD. Meanwhile Diarmuid, Nebula Lord and the original Luquier are all tied behind him at 1500 yen.

Sapporo's Open tournament also marks the pro debut of Tachikaze's Ancient Dragons build, with Satou Yuu's Tyranno Legend making it into the top 4. The actual brackets for which decks will be used in the fight for the national title is not set in stone, as the cardfighters competing may change their decks prior to the championship finals in August.

Surprisingly, the winning team from Sapporo's Open class team tournament included a cardfighter emulating the reigning North American national champion Kaden Kawakami. Jinma Nobuoaki ran an even more extreme variation of Kawakami's DOTE model, with twelve stand triggers instead of six. The grade 3 makeup is relatively rare for the current Japanese format, as most Kagerou cardfighters would prefer Dauntless Drive Dragon as a supporting unit in order to give their deck a limit break and guaranteed extra drive checks, but Jinma instead stuck with the classic, crossride-centric model.

Meanwhile the Nagoya regional has marked the return of established pro cardfighter Koyanagi Keita, who also appeared in Nagoya's previous summer team tournament during FR2012. Koyanagi has since retooled his Dudley Emperor deck to follow the current Bad End Dragger trend, but also further expanded upon it using the search card Jelly Beans and the Dudley series units to bypass gradelock by being able to search for his grade 1 and 2 rides directly. The strategy was previously seen in the Sendai team tournament, where Katou Hirohisa similarly applied it for better overall consistency. Notably, Koyanagi's team included another veteran, Fujii Takaya, who ran a Spectral Duke Dragon deck in the previous year but is now using a PR♥ISM deck. As at FR2012, Koyanagi's team has a Shadow Paladin cardfighter onboard as their lead player, and they have once again come out as Nagoya's first place team.

News: Bushiroad Announces New Trial Deck, Confirms WCS2013, BT11 to be Released Before BT10

Today Bushiroad USA has put out a press release detailing their plans for 2013, bringing with it the formal announcement of WCS2013 as well as its European and Asia-Oceanian branches. Careful reading of the press release also reveals a new trial deck, "Extra Trial Deck EXTD-01" which will "contain exclusive deck accessories for both new and veteran players". Some speculate that EXTD-01, scheduled to be sold during the 2013 holiday season, may be a counterpart to the VG-DG01 DAIGO Special Set, but Bushiroad has kept quiet about the matter.
Surprisingly, Bushiroad has also announced that VGE-BT11: Seal Dragons Unleashed, which was previously slated for a December 13th release following VGE-BT10: Triumphant Return of the King of Knights on October 25th, has had its release date swapped and will be released on October 25th while BT10 will instead come in December. Producer of the English-language Cardfight!! Vanguard TCG cited "production and operational issues." This may be a move to prevent Dragonic Descendant from gaining the same dominance in the English format that he held until recently in Japan, as BT10's new release date is outside the bounds of the now-confirmed dates for World Championship 2013 while before it would have been released prior to the finals in November.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Bushiroad Unveils World Championship 2013, New Cardfight!! Vanguard Product and Future Card Buddyfight Plans
Singapore (July 7, 2013) – Bushiroad announced the official logo and qualifying structure for the upcoming Cardfight!! Vanguard World Championship 2013. Similar to the first ever World Championship held in 2012, open national qualifiers will be held in the regions of North America, Europe and Asia-Oceania.
These qualifiers are scheduled to be held in September and October 2013. The finalists from the qualifiers will face each other in their respective continental championships in November 2013. The continental representatives will then battle for the World Championship 2013 title in December in a currently undisclosed venue.
A new Cardfight!! Vanguard product under the working title, Extra Trial Deck EXTD-01, was also revealed at the conference. This premium trial deck gift set will contain exclusive deck accessories for both new and veteran players and is expected to be sold during the festive seasons at the end of 2013.
Bushiroad also announced changes to the release dates of Booster Pack Vol. 10 and Booster Pack Vol. 11. Mr. Shunichi Taira, producer of the English edition Cardfight!! Vanguard, cited that the changes were made due to production and operational issues.
Booster Pack Vol. 11 Seal Dragons Unleashed was brought forward to October 25, 2013. Booster Pack Vol. 10 Triumphant Return of the King of Knights will be available from December 13, 2013.
Bushiroad revealed more information about the new license, “Future Card Buddyfight,” that was previously unveiled in June 2013. The rules are easy to pick up, and players will be able to learn the rules by watching the TV animation. Players can choose their favorite monster to be their ‘Buddy Monster.’ Monsters from different worlds in Buddyfight allow players to bring different strategies to the game.
Bushiroad USA Inc. and Bushiroad South East Asia Pte Ltd will provide support during the simultaneous release of the Japanese and English editions of Future Card Buddyfight in January 2014.
The Future Card Buddyfight license will be heavily promoted through comic serialization and animation.  Comic serialization begins from Winter 2013 in Shogakukan’s “CoroCoro Comic.” The TV animation will be released in Japan in early 2014, with the animation done by OLM Inc., the animation studio behind the Pokémon movie series and “Inazuma Eleven.” Bushiroad has also announced plans to air the English-dubbed animation in Singapore, Malaysia and on YouTube.
